Girl with Ice Cream, 2008

I’ve been researching art that incorporates light as a medium, so I thought I’d share an example of what I’ve found so far. This particular piece incorporates over 1,000 small medical glass containers filled with colored liquid – which immediately reminded me of a laboratory, which reminded me of the Science Center that most of y’all are using as the site for the next project. Regardless, it is a fine source of inspiration.

materials: Metal, white/opal plexiglas, glass liquid containers, coloured water, fluorescent lamps.

Space is Process

Olafur Eliasson is a Danish artist who is interested in the extent one may have an impact on their world. An essential aspect of his art is that it directly involves the viewer in a space that is traditionally not accessible to the viewer for participation. Popular mediums of Eliasson’s include light, mirrors, shadow, color, wind and fog. The following piece is titled ‘slow-motion shadow in colour’ 2009 and until 2 days ago, it was on show at the 21st century museum of contemporary art, kanazawa, japan.

“with this exhibition, eliasson re-proposes the idea of the art museum, to be seen not just simply as a facility in which to view art in a context which is removed from society, but more as a public space, with the potential to engage society and the urban environment. a space in which to question our presence within this world.” >> http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/10/view/9467/olafur-eliasson-your-chance-encounter.html

I found this video and thought it was too great not to share. The artist took 35,000 stills of one day in New York City to make this miniature-looking film. Splitting

Gordon Matta-Clark

This is an arrangement of chromogenic prints mounted on board, though perhaps the stronger example of appropriation is the content of the images. It is a house that the artist literally split down the middle – another example of architectural appropriation.
